Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise when she was just a young girl. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nurse in order to provide her with an opportunity to study theatre or literature. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt recommended it to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered through her example that art can be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, who had a social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents, however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family has been for generations. Her father was awed by the Civil Rights movement's historic march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, would later inspire her to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. In the year 1990 she completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood CA. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism when she was just a student. She started as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to watch the home of one of the members of the jury and look through their trash. Following her disappointment with journalistic work by the assignments she was handed, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay was hired straight from college to be an assistant publicist in a small studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
